The Magic Lantern | Before cinema
Lanterna Mágica
In this era of great technological sophistication, especially concerning images, Abi Feijó (from Casa Museu de Vilar, in collaboration with Elsa Cerqueira and Cinema para Crianças) takes us back in time. He guides us through an era when the image culture we have today didn't exist, revealing that the simplicity of archaic images can still amaze and enchant us, using a technology from the mid-17th century: the Magic Lantern.
The great ingenuity and simplicity of these hand-painted images still captivate us. This presentation includes about 70 magic lantern plates from the late 19th century, belonging to the collections of Casa Museu de Vilar and Elsa Cerqueira. The Magic Lanterns used date back to the late 19th century, including a Biunial lantern.
This show, accompanied by live music performed by André Aires (keyboard, clarinet, and sound effects) and Guilherme Magalhães (guitar), with sound by Rafael Silva, is divided into six parts:
- Musical Introduction: As the audience arrives.
- Historical Context: A brief overview of the origins of moving images, image projection, and the creation of audiovisual spectacles.
- Image Animation Mechanisms: Exploring various techniques to animate images.
- Visual and Poetic Narrative: Highlighting the importance of sound in complementing visual storytelling.
- Phantasmagoria Recreation: A recreation of what a Phantasmagoria might have been.
- Audience Engagement: Inviting the audience to closely observe the Magic Lantern slides, immersed in a conducive musical environment.
History of MAGIC LANTERN
The Magic Lantern was invented in 1659 by Dutch physicist Christian Huygens. It was extremely popular from the late 17th to the late 20th century, in an era when image culture was virtually non-existent. It was the precursor to audiovisual shows (Phantasmagories), Optical Theatre (Luminous Pantomimes), and the Lumière Brothers' cinema. All devices that project images drawings, photographs, films, videos, or computers—are based on the same principles as the Magic Lantern. The Magic Lantern takes us back in time, bringing the magic of analog images, a technology from the mid-17th century, with a significant performative aspect dependent on the lanternist's skills and inspiration, making each presentation unique.
THE PORTUGUESE LANTERNISTS OF THE 21st CENTURY
Abi Feijó, Elsa Cerqueira, André Aires, Guilherme Magalhães, and Rafael Silva are the 21st-century Portuguese Lanternists. They present the Magic Lantern slides from the collections of Casa Museu de Vilar and Elsa Cerqueira. Abi Feijó, the creator and director of Casa Museu de Vilar, has been passionate about pre-cinema for many years. He began presenting Magic Lantern shows in 2014, initially solo and tentatively, later collaborating with other group members or Samuel Martins Coelho, incorporating live music into the performances. Elsa Cerqueira, winner of the Global Teacher Award 2021, invested part of her prize in acquiring a Magic Lantern and a collection of slides. Part of this collection is featured in these shows. André Aires, musician and composer, accompanies on the keyboard. Guilherme Magalhães plays the Portuguese and electric guitar. Rafael Silva is the sound technician.

Doismileoito
Band

Doismileoito is a Portuguese indie rock band from Maia, Porto, consisting of Pedro Pode (vocals and guitar), André Aires (drums), Nicolau Fernandes (bass), and Bruno Testo (guitar). They formed in 2005 and began rehearsing, as they say, "in a cold and damp garage." From the beginning, Doismileoito had clear priorities: to build a career and maintain a close connection with their audience. They chose their name because they found it aesthetically appealing.
The band decided to sing in Portuguese as they believe it is the easiest and most direct way to reach people and convey their message. Their inspirations include Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Beatles, Beastie Boys, Michael Jackson, Beethoven, Tom Waits, and Sam the Kid, with each band member drawing from different influences.
In 2006, they won the TMN Garage Sessions and opened the Sudoeste Festival at their fourth concert. They also performed at the first Super Bock em Stock and were featured in the last Fnac New Talents compilation. At the time, they didn’t feel the weight of responsibility, but now, looking back, they feel they were "out of context."

Discography
In 2009, Doismileoito released their self-titled debut album, which was well-received, with a sold-out launch concert at Plano B in Porto. This was followed by a mini national tour that introduced them across the country and surprised them with the level of audience engagement. The album features melancholic tracks like “O Caminho Que Fazias Ganhou Silvas e a tua Gaveta Pó” and “Cabanas,” contrasting with more lively songs like “A Ponte Findling” and “Bem Melhor 12200074,” showcasing the active and dynamic side of this Porto-based band.
In September 2011, their second full-length album, "Pés Frios," was released. According to the band, this album is more mature, yet lighter and more direct, both musically and lyrically. Unlike their debut album, which was in the works for four years and recorded in three months, "Pés Frios" was conceived over a year and recorded in just nine days. The melodies are simple, clear, and catchy, with instruments complementing Pedro Pode's excellent voice. The album oscillates between rock and pop, with clear national influences. An example is “Quinta-feira,” the opening track and first single from "Pés Frios."

2016 Suggia - XI Curso de Formação de Animadores Musicais, opens in a new tab at Casa da Música.
During my path as a musician and composer, I realized that much of the work involves observation and listening. The more dynamic and diverse the interaction with new environments and musicians, the greater the growth. The XI Curso de Formação de Animadores Musicais at Casa da Música significantly contributed to this growth as a composer. Through it, I met many musicians, some of whom became friends. The trainers (Sam Mason, opens in a new tab, Tim Steiner, opens in a new tab, Paul Griffiths, opens in a new tab, and Pete Letanka, opens in a new tab) set us various challenges that were crucial for exploring collective dynamics.
This experience reinforced my belief that music plays a superb role in communication with others and that their reaction to our musical manifesto/language is always unpredictable. A special thanks to Paul Griffiths, opens in a new tab, who invited me to perform one of the first pieces I composed for the album "Geração," called "Ciclo," at the final concert. A piece I had just finished composing at the time! Here is the performance encapsulated in this recording.
